The Food and Drug Administration recently changed the way merchants have to label suntan lotion products. Prior to this labeling change manufactures could label their products without having to prove the effectiveness because of this products could not always be trusted. Now the product will be labeled with its effectiveness against UVA (Ultraviolet-A) light, UVB light or both. Products are now prohibited from making claims that have not been proven such as "waterproof" and "all-day". These changes benefit then consumers in choosing a product right for them.

There are numerous choices the consumer has for sun protection it is just a matter of preference. Customers can choose lotion, spray, cream, ointments, or gels to apply before going into the sun. There are separate products available specifically for the lips, eyes, and nose. Just check the SPF to see how much protection these products give.

Customers will notice numbers on the bottles that read SPF 30 in varying degrees. SPF refers to the sun protection factor the product offers. It does not mean you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than normal but it is referring to the amount of time under the same exposure type that a person can remain in the sun without burning. Numerous variables affect how much exposure a person needs before burning.

One of the main problems with sunscreen protection is that consumers often do not apply enough. If an adequate amount of the product is not applies it greatly reduces the effectiveness of sun protection. When applying sunscreen a minimum of five to six teaspoons must be put on. It is better to put too much then not enough. Always rub on the first time 30 minutes before sun exposure.

Some products protect against only UVB radiation while others protect against UVB and UVA. If the product protects against both it is classified as broad spectrum. Broad Spectrum protection is recommended for everyone 6 months of age or older. Sunscreen is not recommended for infants under 6 months of age because there skin may not be able to handle the chemicals in the product.

Extended sun exposure can cause sunburns, cancer, and premature wrinkling. To maintain a healthy lifestyle and protect your skin form damage you should buy the suntan lotion product that gives them the most protection from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays. Remember to reapply every two hours and apply generously.
